The article is aimed to investigate the role of shame in the formation of man by the
comparison of the heroic ethos of antiquity and pragmatic discourse of modern times.
The key question which determined the logic of the paper is the following: how does
the system of values in垹uence on the feeling of shame? Analysing the transformation
of the notions of shame and dignity in the history of philosophy, the author focuses her
attention on the ancient thinkers: Plato, Aristotle and Diogenes of Sinope.
