Introductory and inserted components have frequently undergone linguistic studies. However, they have rarely been considered within the discourse of a single author. In Y. M. Lotman’s publicistic writing these components express subjective modality, structure sentences. Interaction of the above-stated components is of particular interest. Inserts, including parentheses, can be syntagmatically connected or disconnected with the main statement. Blending introductory and inserted components in Y. M. Lotman’s publicistic writing emphasizes the author’s personality, making readers feel involved in personal
communication with the author.
