The article is dedicated to students’ self-evaluation refl ected in the Russian prose of the XIX century. The work discusses various linguistic means of student’s self-evaluation, the evaluation of his mate and other students in general. The frequency of use of linguistic evaluative tools in the analyzed material is considered.. Presented in prosaic texts,
students’ self-evaluation is compared with the external point of view, which is refl ected in the social attitudes towards the students. The author draws parallels of the social views on students, described in the scientifi c literature on history and sociology, analyses the similarities and differences between them and draws the portrayal of the typical student of that historic period refl ected in fi ction, are revealed.
