The paper is devoted to the phenomenon of science fi ction, which is popular among present-day teenagers. The author traces the origin and development of science fi ction and divides it into three categories, i.e. an imaginary country or the world,
similarity to the real world and change of a character’s appearance. The author comes to the conclusion that fantasy is a reliable tool of understanding the reality. This factor explains the growth in popularity of the genre and topicality of many texts.
