Based on the analysis of the Chinese artists’ illustrations to the fairy tales by H. C. Andersen, such as “The Little Mermaid”, “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Nightingale”, the author demonstrates the influence of cultural characteristics on the interpretation of fairy tales and, accordingly, on the transfer of these unique cultural codes in illustrations by artists. It is noted that some interpretation of the semantic component of the fairy tale reveal particular transformation of meanings due to the inclusion of national values in the illustrated narration, as well as a more profound refl ection of national characteristics and culture in fairy tales with the scenes being set in artists’ native China.
