The article analyzes the attitude of Orthodox clergy to the revolutionary events of 1917–1918 as refl ected in “Orel Diocesian Journal”, one of the provincial Russian periodicals. Analyzing the historical source, the author comes to the conclusion that
many clerics and ordinary believers anticipated the February Revolution of 1917 and supported the activity of the Russian Provisional Government. During the days of the collapse of the social values they motivated the congregation for peace, consent and
observance of civic laws. In October 1917 many church representatives foresaw the tragic events and were already disappointed in the changes that had taken place in the country.
