The article explores two sub-cycles of the canons from J. S. Bach's “Goldberg Variations”. The fi rst cycle contains 10 pieces and is included into the variational sequence, whereas the second canon is placed in the fi nal part of the hard copy. This part is titled as Various canons on the eight fi rst bass notes of the precedent Aria
(Verschiedene Canones über die ersteren acht Fundamental- Noten vorheriger Arie). The article provides a comparative analysis of both sub-cycles and concludes that the sub-cycles of canons belong to different genres, the fi rst one being for the performance purposes, while the second one had been intended for the intellectual repose.
