The article reveals the content of higher professional education. Characteristic features, changes and historical stages of the evolution of universities are defi ned from the standpoint of sociology. The authors reveal the process of forming of new social institutions and withering of old ones, and outline four stages in the evolution of higher professional education. The high level of competition is a sign of the new stage of the education development. In a situation of survival, universities become think-tanks. The products of these think-tanks are educational services and the authority of experts.
