FEATURES OF THE NEW LANGUAGE (NEWSPEAK) OF RUSSIAN PAGANS

R. V. Shizhenskiy
Price: 50 руб.
Contemporary paganism, like other new religious movements (NRMs), includes theoretical explanations and substantiations of the doctrines created by ideologists of associations, oral speeches of leaders, replicated in the form of narratives, electronic media, fixed prophecies, writings of adherents (usually within the first generation). Russian paganism of the 20th–21st centuries has its own “newspeak” (new language), created by founders of communities and implemented in ritual practice. Modern “pagan language” appears in onomastics, ritual terminology and construction of magical verbal formulas. New languages used by today’s polytheists are represented by “scientese” and “ethnically enriched” groups with a tendency to text complication. In addition, following other NRMs, pagans are “determined” by a set of standardised markers that can be found in basic concepts and expressions.
Key words: Russian neopaganism, community, narrative, leader, newspeak, terms, “wegroup”, construct.
