The article explores the formation of phraseological units that play the role of symbols in the Russian language. Included in the text, they are aimed at being recognized by the reader on the basis of components that are isolated from phraseological units; yet, they
bear the most relevant meaning in a particular situation. New lexical units may be created on the basis of phraseological units, giving rise to a symbolic meaning, thus enhancing the expression, and the evaluation of phraseological units. This type of author’s variation provides new possibilities for the creative modifi cation of fi xed expressions.
