In traditional Chinese architecture the image of the dragon is often used as a decorative element to emphasize the sanctity of the building and reinforce the projection of grandeur and power. Columns with images of a dragon are the main bearing elements of the building; hence, the origin of their name, i.e. the “dragon columns”. They were often placed inside a palace or a temple. Decorative art of «dragon columns” is de fi ned by
visual richness and exquisite craftsmanship and represents a classical example of the Chinese art of carving.
