The article reviews the evolutionary process which led to the emergence of the homophonic concept in the music of the Western European baroque. The author highlights basic premises and factors of this momentous event. Music texture and form/composition are analyzed in the light of the theory of relief and background developed by the author. The relief/background pair, which took shape in the baroque
period, correlates with the aesthetic and philosophical antinomy of the individual and universal.
