The article explores the issue of identifi cation of the dulcian, wind instrument popular in the period from 14th to 16th centuries. Absence of artefacts led to the emergence of con fl icting opinions about the instrument. In this connection, the author traces in detail the dulcian’s construction and area of use based on the information derived from historical sources. He also reviews various interpretations of the instrument offered by scholars
in the 20th and 21 st centuries. The author concludes by emphasizing the importance of dulcian’s description in the light of the archaeological discovery at the end of the 20th century in order to provide precise information about this antique musical instrument, offer correct interpretation of historical sources and eliminate confusion due to the absence of artefacts.
