The paper addresses the main tasks of researchers training in Russian higher education at master’s level and the role of linguistic training in successful implementation of these challengies. The author suggests and justifies the main directions of modernising the content of linguistic training of master’s students. The considered directions of optimising the linguistic training of master’s students assume a wide spectrum of changes both in the content of foreign language training and in teaching methods and the methodological approach to linguistic education at master’s level. The paper also describes some problems blocking the modernisation of the content of master’s programmes on foreign languages.
